Removal of junk configurations at Olympic level – Utappia

Removal of junk configurations at Olympic level – Utappia

uCareSystem had the ability to detect packages that were removed and then remove their configuration files. Now it uses a better way that detects more. Also with this release there are fixes and improvements that make it even more useful.

First of all, it’s the Olympics… and I had to show some cool ASCII characters….

Below is a summary of the changes:

Fix: Duplicate entries for packages requesting restart, issue #72

This one was a bit of a surprise because one day when I was updating my system with uCareSystem 24.07.x I was asked to reboot because some packages were asking for it. As I scrolled to see what packages I saw:

libssl3 was displayed 2 times! and…i thought:

Why on earth are you showing the packages 2 or more times?

With the new release 24.09.05 this is no longer a problem….

Fix: Warning: The unit file, source configuration file or drop-ins of apt-news.service have been modified on disk. Run ‘systemctl daemon-reload’ to reload units. Issue #71

This is an Ubuntu specific issue that was just a visual warning (in bright yellow!) when the “apt update” was called by uCareSystem… But my OCD kicked in. I had to get rid of it without uninstalling it, because some Ubuntu servers use it…

Improvement: Show list of possible upgrades and the versions of packages that will be upgraded

As geeks we love to see what is going to be upgraded in an informative way. We also like to know from which version to which. So with the release of 24.09. 05 you can see the beautiful numbers on your screen 🙂

Ubuntu users should be aware that updates are released in phases. Even if you see packages available for upgrade, there is a chance that they are not yet upgraded.

More information can be found in the official documentation: About apt upgrade and phased updates

Improvement: Issue with removed packages #1

Yes… you read it right… the first and oldest issue reported was fixed after almost 7 years… and I think:

Yeah yeah… I know… I let the “deborphan” do the work for years and I didn’t want to remove it… but it’s time to reduce external dependencies as much as possible…

With uCareSystem 24.09. 05 you will see that it detects more unused, old and unwanted configurations that need to be removed.
