Patrick Mahomes continued his career magic on Sunday night by surpassing Len Dawson as the Kansas City Chiefs’ all-time leading passing player with a complete second-quarter pass to star tight end Travis Kelce in the 2024 NFL season opener.

Dawson’s record of 28,507 passing yards with the Chiefs has stood since 1975, but Mahomes is unavoidable.

After his historic performance, Alex Smith, who played for the team between the 2013-2017 seasons and ranks fourth in Chiefs history with 17,608 passing yards, congratulated the man who eventually replaced him:

“I just have one question for you: What took you so long?” Smith joked in the video. “In all seriousness, what you’ve done for this team, this city, and everyone who’s ever worn a Chiefs jersey is nothing short of incredible. You make us all proud, both on and off the field. From the beginning, we all knew you would take this franchise to new heights, and that’s exactly what you’ve done.”
