The Venezuelan government has announced that opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González has left the country and sought asylum in Spain.

Mr González is in hiding and an arrest warrant has been issued for him, as he maintains he is the rightful winner of the July elections.

“After voluntarily seeking refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas a few days ago, (Gonzalez Urrutia) has asked the Spanish government for political asylum,” Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez said on social media.

She added that Caracas had agreed to his safe passage and he had left.
