Colorado head coach Deion Sanders stressed after the game that his team’s 28-10 loss to Nebraska does not reflect the true level of his team.

The Buffaloes trailed by 28 points at halftime. Sanders told reporters that the start “just wasn’t typical of who we are” and that “we just never got it together.”

Others will argue that the performance was entirely representative of Colorado, as many of the same issues from 2023 are still present in the second year of the Coach Prime era.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was under constant pressure, being sacked six times before being forced off the field late in the fourth quarter.

Shedeur completed 23 of 38 passes for 244 yards, one touchdown and one interception, which was returned for a score for Nebraska in the first quarter.

Deion Sanders said during his postgame press conference that he had “no idea” what was causing the Buffs’ offense to struggle immensely, citing pass protection as the reason.

“It seemed like we never got it done until it was too late,” he said. “It seemed like we never got it done. Protection was an issue. I try to be polite and say it, because I can say the same thing you do, but if I say it, you’re saying I’m throwing my guys under the bus. I’m not doing that at all. Protection was an issue. We’ve got to find a way to prevent that and deal with it better.”

Colorado, which averaged the fewest rushing yards in FBS last year, also had a nonexistent running game. Dallan Hayden, Isaiah Augustave and Charlie Offerdahl combined for 42 yards on 11 carries.

And while the Buffs’ defense held Nebraska scoreless in the second half, that could be a mix of the Buffaloes getting better up front and Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule going conservative to protect a big lead. The home team operated with little urgency after the break.

Additionally, Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola was not sacked once during the game, enjoying a clean pocket and plenty of time to throw all night.

Sanders was given some benefit of the doubt when his team lost eight of its final nine games last season. Going 4-8 was an improvement over what the program did in Karl Dorrell’s final year.

However, Colorado has not shown much improvement on the field in the two games of 2024.
