Rapper to headline Super Bowl halftime show

Rapper Kendrick Lamar will headline the Super Bowl halftime show, the National Football League and Apple Music announced Sunday.

It’s the Grammy- and Pulitzer Prize-winning artist’s second time performing at one of music’s most coveted events, but his first time headlining.

“Rap music continues to be the most impactful genre to date, and I’m going to be here to remind the world why,” Lamar said in a statement. “They got the right one.”

The Super Bowl will be held on February 9 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Lamar performed alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Mary J Blige at the 2022 Super Bowl show.

The show won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).

The 37-year-old rapper from Compton is known as one of the most inventive lyricists in the hip-hop genre. In 2018, he became the first hip-hop artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for music.

“Kendrick has proven time and time again that he can create unique moments that resonate, redefine hip-hop and ultimately shake its foundations,” NFL Music Director Seth Dudowsky said in a statement.

Lamar made headlines this year for a public feud with Canadian rapper Drake. The two stars released a series of diss tracks earlier this year.

Two of the songs Lamar collaborated on became huge hits, including “Like That” by Future and Metro Boomin and “Not Like Us” by Lamar himself.

Other major artists who have performed at the sporting event include Rihanna, Usher, Beyonce, the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.

The Super Bowl is the largest sporting event in the United States, attracting tens of millions of viewers and broadcast around the world.
