Tottenham v Arsenal: Gunners wear away kit in match for first time in 38 years

Arsenal will wear the away kit for the first time in 38 years in Sunday’s North London derby after the red and white home shirt was deemed incompatible with Tottenham’s colours.

The Gunners will wear their black away kit at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said their home shirt contained “too much white”.

Arsenal also said there had been discussions about wearing the home shirt with red shorts and socks, but no agreement had been reached.

As part of PGMOL’s decision, Tottenham will also wear their away kit when they play the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium in January.

“The PGMOL and the Premier League have determined that our home kit for the 2024-25 season contains too much white, which clashes with Tottenham’s traditional colours. The option of red shorts and socks for us, which has also been discussed, has also been discussed,” Arsenal said.

“That is why we are wearing our new colours for the first time in the recent history of the NLD.”

Arsenal Shirt Collection on X, external say the club last wore their away shirt during the derby in the 1985-86 season.

Mikel Arteta’s side go into the match fourth in the Premier League with seven points from their opening three games, while Spurs are tenth with four points.
