County Championship: Archie Vaughan takes six wickets against Surrey

Vaughan was primarily a batsman and scored 44 runs as an opener in Somerset’s first innings.

He bowled alongside fellow spinner Jack Leach, a member of the England squad for the tour to Pakistan, and together they bowled more than 85 overs.

Foakes, who lost his England Test place to Surrey team-mate Jamie Smith, was hit for 37 at short leg.

Vaughan then had Clark caught at mid-wicket by Tom Abell and Steel was caught behind the wicket within three balls.

Left-handed Leach claimed the vital wickets of Rishi Patel (70) and Shakib Al Hasan (12) before Tom Curran mounted a counter-attack to reach 50 wickets from 33 balls.

Leach ended the innings just before lunch when Curran was caught long-on for 86 off 75 balls, including eight sixes. Leach ended the innings with 4-105.

Surrey started the race 24 points ahead of Somerset with just two rounds remaining in the race to claim a third County Championship title in a row.
