Reeves urged to launch tax attack on lump-sum pensions

Reeves urged to launch tax attack on lump-sum pensions

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has called on the Chancellor to cap the amount that can be taken tax-free from pension pots. Currently, people can take up to 25% of their pension as a tax-free lump sum when they turn 55, up to a maximum of £286,275. The IFS said cutting the amount to £100,000 would affect around one in five pensioners and save £2 billion in the long term.

However, there is growing fear among economists that the government’s proposed tax hikes, in addition to the ongoing bleak story, will kill the momentum needed for economic growth. These charts show the obstacles facing Ms Reeves.
