BMW recalls 1.5 million vehicles due to brake system problem

MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – BMW (BMW.L) is recalling 1.5 million vehicles in five countries, including 270,000 cars in the United States, due to a problem with the braking system.

The affected models, produced between June 2022 and August 2024, include the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, the Rolls-Royce Spectre, two Mini variants and several BMW crossovers.

The automaker told the Associated Press news agency that the problem with the braking system, which is produced by auto supplier Continental, was first discovered during an internal quality control check.

In addition, a BMW spokesperson told the Associated Press that the company has developed “diagnostic software to detect a brake defect before it occurs.” If a potential brake defect is detected, the software will warn the driver with a warning to immediately go to a dealer to have the system replaced free of charge.

The spokesman added that in the unlikely event of a fault, the braking system will revert to a ‘safe mode’ so that the brakes work and meet legal standards, but drivers will need to apply more force.

Continental confirmed that the parts will need to be replaced, but assured that there is no risk of braking performance falling below the legally required standards.

The Munich company expects the costs of the recall to be in the high three-digit millions of euros.
