BROOMFIELD, Colorado — Police responded Thursday to what they are calling an active shooter at an apartment building in the Denver suburb of Broomfield.

Police have released little information other than to say that officers responded to a shooting at the Arista Flats apartments and that the area was not safe.

The city’s SWAT team, crisis negotiators and law enforcement from nearby communities are assisting, police said. A school near the scene has been placed on lockdown.

Some people were evacuated and police sent an emergency alert to nearby residents so they could take shelter.

Broomfield is a town of about 75,000 people located about 15 miles northwest of Denver.
