Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur faces a 12-match ban for an alleged racist remark about South Koreans on Uruguayan television.

When Bentancur appeared on the show in June, he was asked for a Tottenham player’s shirt and he replied: “Sonny’s?” – referring to his teammate Heung-min Son.

He then added that it could also be Son’s cousin, because “they’re all more or less the same.”

The FA confirmed they have charged the South American with a ‘serious breach’ of their rules.

A statement from the Football Association (FA) said: ‘Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with an alleged breach of FA rule E3 for misconduct in connection with a media interview.

‘It is alleged that the Tottenham midfielder breached FA rule E3.1 by behaving in an improper manner and/or using offensive language and/or bringing the game into disrepute.

‘It is further alleged that this constitutes a ‘serious offence’ as defined in FA Rule E3.2 as it contains a reference, either express or implied, to nationality and/or racial and/or ethnic origin.’

If found guilty, Bentancur faces a minimum six-game ban. If he admits the charges, he faces a 12-game ban.

Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has avoided punishment from the Football Association for his role in a discriminatory social media video that made derogatory comments about players from the France national team.

FIFA and Chelsea have launched an investigation after a video emerged on social media following Argentina’s Copa America victory, showing Fernandez and his team-mates singing a racist song about the French team as they celebrated the Copa America in July.

There were indications at the time that the FA would also investigate Fernandez’s role in the video, as he is seen as a ‘participant’ in English football.

However, the FA is not investigating the matter as the video was recorded while Fernandez was on international duty, so this is a matter for FIFA and CONEMBOL.
