Two months after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, the FBI announced it is investigating another attempted assassination of Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The former president was playing a round of golf near his Mar-a-Lago home when a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle with a scope in the bushes outside the course, officials said. The Secret Service opened fire, but the man fled in a vehicle. A nearby witness took a photo of the car and told authorities, leading to an arrest.

The man in custody was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, according to three senior law enforcement officials. An AR-style rifle was found at the crime scene, law enforcement officials told NBC News. The man in custody has a long history of criminal and civil lawsuits, including a conviction for possession of a machine gun.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement that Trump was “safe” after the incident. Trump left the golf course a few hours later in his motorcade and returned to Mar-a-Lago. It is not yet clear whether the suspect fired any shots, the Secret Service said.

Vice President Kamala Harris responded to the event, saying, “We must all do our part to ensure this incident does not lead to further violence.” House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a message to X that he spent “a few hours” with Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday and called the former president “unstoppable.”

House GOP struggles to avoid shutdown

House Republicans are trying again this week with a stopgap funding measure, with just 15 days left before the money runs out. There are also growing concerns about a federal government shutdown, including among leading Republicans worried about the political fallout ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

House Speaker Mike Johnson worked through the weekend, reaching out to various factions in his 220-member GOP conference to find a path forward for a short-term funding bill. The speaker’s initial strategy was a six-month continuing resolution tied to the SAVE Act, legislation backed by Donald Trump that requires proof of citizenship to vote. But Johnson and the whip team couldn’t muster the GOP votes needed to pass that package, and the speaker abruptly pulled the bill from the floor just hours before a scheduled vote. It’s unclear whether Johnson will try to tweak the SAVE Act approach or try something completely different this week.

Time is running out to avoid a funding freeze on October 1 and Johnson trying to find a way forward in a short-term financing account.

The 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards were handed out, with “Shōgun,” the historical fiction series about feudal Japan in the 17th century, taking home four major awards.

“Shōgun” set a new high at the Emmys, with a total of 18 awards, the most wins for a show in a single year. It won for Best Drama Series, Hiroyuki Sanada won for Best Actor in a Drama, and Anna Sawai won Best Actress. In addition to the major acting awards, “Shōgun” was also nominated for a slew of technical awards, including Production Design, Original Dramatic Score and Stunt Performance, and became the first show to take home 14 Emmys at the Creative Arts ceremony. NFL Week 2 Highlights

The second week of the 2024 NFL season delivered some shocking upsets, an AFC thriller and some spectacular individual performances. Sports editor Greg Rosenstein lists the best moments of the weekend:

🏈 The Chiefs, especially with Taylor Swift looking on at Arrowhead Stadium, always seem to find a way. Against the Bengals, they trailed 25-23 late in the fourth quarter, but Kansas City was called for a pass interference penalty on fourth-and-16 to keep their final drive alive. The Chiefs then won the game with a 51-yard field goal as time expired by kicker Harrison Butker.

🤠 Alvin Kamara and the Saints are rolling. New Orleans dominated the Dallas Cowboys 44-19 thanks to four scores from their star running back. Quarterback Derek Carr added 243 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception as New Orleans improved to 2-0.

💪 Marvin Harrison Jr. finally showed why he entered the league with so much excitement. After a disappointing professional debut, the Cardinals’ first-round pick caught four passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns in Arizona’s lopsided 41-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

🤩 Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold threw a 97-yard bomb to star receiver Justin Jefferson in Minnesota’s 23-17 upset victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The thrilling score was significant in more ways than one: It was against Darnold’s former team.

Staff choice: Cut up and rented out, the bodies of the poor suffer a final humiliation in Texas

A Texas medical school has dissected and rented out hundreds of unclaimed bodies over the past five years — often without the deceased’s consent and without their family members’ knowledge. In some cases, families were searching for their missing loved ones as this happened, reporters Mike Hixenbaugh, Jon Schuppe and Susan Carroll discovered.

After reporters recently shared the findings of their 10-month investigation with the University of North Texas Health Science Center, the school announced major changes in response: suspending its body donation program, firing executives and hiring a consulting firm to investigate the practices.

But for some families that step came too late, who were devastated to learn that their family members had been dismembered after they died. “It’s like a hole in your soul that can never be filled,” said Brenda Cloud, whose brother, Victor Honey, was taken in 2022 for medical examination and training. “We feel violated.”
