Lavender Hill gets new world-class community facility

Lavender Hill has a new world class facility that will benefit the community, sports clubs and school for years to come.

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (WCAS) and the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) hosted a celebration of the Lavender Hill Shared Facility last week, bringing together local learners, school principals, seniors’ fitness groups, private sector partners, community councillors and sporting organisations.

People On the kwai-green turf, children can play football, softball and rugby. There is also a hockey field, indoor fitness classes and netball and tennis courts.

Fans can cheer on their team from the main stand and visitors can make use of the clubhouse, complete with parking and a dugout.

WCAS MEC Ricardo Mackenzie hopes that many sports stars will be born at this facility.

He says: “We believe that here in Lavender Hill and in communities across our province, there are winners. There are future Springboks and Bafana Bafana stars.

“We have developed these facilities, where we organize sports and recreational programs on a daily basis, to ensure that there are opportunities to identify and develop young talents.

“But it’s not just about finding future champions. All children should have the opportunity to play, create, compete, achieve and have fun with healthy activities.”

Mackenzie continued that they recognize there is a need to address inequities in the infrastructure available for school sports and recreation.

He adds: “In addition to this shared facility, we are working with municipalities and other partners to develop shared facilities in Mitchells Plain, Malmesbury, George, Beaufort West and Kraaifontein.

“Thanks to all the organizations and passionate people who work with us to create more opportunities for young people in our province.”

Schools from across the district and beyond, as well as other clubs and community groups, can use these facilities.

Ward 68 Councillor Marita Petersen said: “We welcome the facility as there is still a lot of gang warfare in Lavender Hill. A safe place in the form of the facility is what our children need to keep them safe, occupied and away from gang recruitment.”
