Prime Minister Steven Miles promotes affordable housing

Affordable housing is set to become a major issue at the state election, with Premier Steven Miles calling for more homes for Carseldine Village in Brisbane’s north.

The Miles government has promised to build 53,500 social housing units by 2046 and the Prime Minister was in Carseldine on Wednesday morning to announce that 152 one, two and three-bedroom apartments will be built in the borough for residents on tighter budgets.

The homes will cost the government $87 million and are expected to be completed in 2026.

“It sends a signal to the rest of the property market… this is what the homes and urban renewal projects of the future should look like,” Miles said.

The announcement was for an expansion of the existing complex of social and affordable housing on the site of the former QUT campus. The expansion was first planned by the state government’s Labor government in 2016, but was met with widespread criticism from local residents.

Once all five phases are completed, Carseldine Village will have over 600 available homes, as well as green spaces, a supermarket, specialty shops and restaurants.

The area is also close to schools, a swimming pool and the train station.

“We need affordable housing in Brisbane, and we can either put it halfway down Gympie in an endless urban sprawl, or we can put it near train stations where people want to live,” said Transport Minister and local member Bart Mellish.
