Biggest Matches of Week 3

Biggest Matches of Week 3

Believe it or not, the Section V regular football season is almost halfway over.

Teams from Hornell to Hilton and from Attica to Geneva take the field to play their third game on Friday or Saturday.

Below are the matches that caught our attention before kick-off.

Monroe (2-0) at Brockport (2-0), Friday 7:00 PM

Although both teams are undefeated in Section V Class A and the game is in Brockport, it would be news if Monroe were to lose to the Blue Devils. Monroe’s unwanted transition from Class B to Class A has gone smoothly.

The Red Jackets have scored nearly 100 points and their defense has one shutout. Terrell Cunningham Jr.a sophomore, has become the team’s quarterback and has thrown seven touchdown passes. At least six Red Jackets have scored a touchdown: Tajmir Mullins, Messiah Hampton, Ray Garcia, McKenzie-Baker Styles and in defense, Terrance Nichols And Terrence Barner.

Win this game and Brockport is a Class A title contender. Like Monroe, the Blue Devils have had success on offense by using multiple players to move the ball to the end zone, rather than relying on one source of production. However, Brockport’s offensive linemen and anyone else asked to block could be the key players. Can Brockport win enough at the line of scrimmage, play after play, or enough in general?

Who do you think would win the competition:

Rush-Henrietta (1-1) at Hilton (2-0), Friday 7:00 PM

This is another chance for the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets to solidify themselves as a contender for the Section V Class AA section title. Hilton is undefeated. The game is at Hilton. There are players who were on the 2023 Rush-Henrietta team that lost 55-12 at Hilton. Is there any doubt that the Royal Comets will have to contend with the Hilton run game with running backs? Signed O’Buck And John Di Battist to win?

“If you can’t sustain that and stop it, it can be a long night,” RH coach Joe Montesano said.

Rush-Henrietta showed it can move the ball and score against a good team last week in a 40-38 loss to McQuaid. Brendan Mangoa sophomore at Rush-Henrietta, threw two touchdown passes and was a running back Justin Medina scored twice and covered 138 yards.

“(Mangone) does a great job of taking care of the ball,” Montesano said. “We didn’t have any turnovers.

“But it’s not just the quarterback. It’s the protection (offensive line and running backs, who are blocking) and the guys who are touching (the ball).”

Hilton’s start looks strong. The Cadets outscored Churchville-Chili and Pittsford by a combined score of 64-14, with Matthew Kosioreka sophomore, at the position of quarterback.

“Once we get healthy … I don’t know what we have yet,” Hilton coach Rich Lipani said. “Defensively, we’ve done a good job considering we’re juggling guys with injuries.”

Who do you think would win the competition:

Aquinas (2-0) at Fairport (2-0), 3:00 PM Saturday

No offense scored against the Aquinas defense. Aquinas running back Derrion fight has a 100-yard rushing game and played a role in the team’s passing offense. Sophomore quarterback Trent Buttles has thrown for 150 or more yards in both of Aquinas’ victories. Still, Aquinas coach Maurice Jackson sees room for improvement.

“Do what we know we can do, make the plays that come up,” Jackson said. “The (21-2 UPrep) score didn’t reflect how the game was going. We missed some opportunities.”

Fairport would likely want to deprive Aquinas of the opportunity to win this Class AA matchup. As a Fairport senior running back Bailey Frank gains a lot of ground, that would be a good sign. The longer the Red Raiders offense has the ball, the less time the Aquinas offense has in possession and the more urgent the chances become.

“Their linemen) are tough, really good in the trenches (on the line of scrimmage),” Jackson said. “It gets physical. It’s something we’re working on getting better at.”
