Meadows, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 225 pounds, has no official school visits scheduled at this time. But he plans to attend a few games at his prospective schools this fall to experience the home game atmosphere.

What’s important to Meadows

Meadows shared what was most important to him when looking at schools.

“At all of these schools (that I’m being recruited by), I want to have a great relationship with my coaches, especially my defensive line coach, edge coach,” Meadows said. “I also want a great education, I think that’s really important. Those are the two biggest things I’m looking for.”

Larry Johnson, Ohio State’s defensive lineman and assistant head coach, and Meadows communicate almost daily, he said.

“We talk almost every day, he sends me scriptures every day. We have great conversations and he always tells me how he wants to continue to build a relationship, and I look forward to that,” Meadows said.

“I love Coach Johnson. He’s very experienced, considered one of the best in the game, so the fact that he’s interested in me is great.”

Meadows is going to take the recruiting process slow, he said, as basketball is also an interesting option. Meadows is a power forward on the hardwood and even has a Division I college basketball offer from American University.

“I just want to go to a show where I’m really loved, you know?” Meadows said.

Ohio Connections

Meadows and Gonzaga opened the season with a trip to Ohio to take on Springfield High School.

It was a seven-hour bus ride, but the game was special for Meadows. He said his father grew up in Cleveland and he has a handful of cousins ​​who also live in Columbus.

“I actually have a lot of family in Ohio, so they got to go to the game in Springfield. It was a great experience,” Meadows said.

He said traveling across state lines and staying in a hotel with his teammates was a great opportunity to build a bond within the team.

Gonzaga defeated Springfield 14-6, making the return trip a lot easier.

According to Meadows, Gonzaga is undefeated and looking forward to the rest of the season.

“Personally, I feel like I’m having a good season. I’m still chasing quarterbacks and the backfield,” Meadows said. “As a team, we’re 3-0, and that’s all we can be right now. I’m proud of that, and proud of my team. We’re going one game at a time and getting ready to win 12.”

‘A pleasure to coach’

Randy Trivers, Gonzaga College football coach and USA Today National Coach of the Year in 2018, said Meadows’s distinguishing feature is his combination of physical ability, football skills and classroom approach all rolled into one student-athlete.

“Carter is a joy to coach,” Trivers said. “He’s a coachable athlete, meaning he’s not afraid to get better. He accepts constructive criticism, he wants to be pushed, he has a really strong work ethic and a positive attitude.

“A player like Carter Meadows is going to have a strong work ethic, he’s going to be ready and willing to work… he’s going to have the right attitude in the locker room, be a team player and be a very intelligent player,” Trivers said.

“He will grow and learn, and he still has a lot of growing and learning to do, but he has a very good instinct and a very good football IQ. That’s what makes him unique, when you put it all together.”
