A former Hollywood actor jailed for attacking his ex-girlfriend was arrested again the next day on suspicion of assault.

Jason Hoganson, 53, gave the thumbs up as he left HMP Durham on September 10, three weeks after serving an 18-month prison sentence for attacking his ex.

A day later, Mr Hoganson was again in police custody, suspected of assault and two violations of a restraining order.

Mr Hoganson, who starred in the 1980s cult classic Empire State, denied assault when he appeared in court.

He admitted violating the restraining order but denied the other charge.

The 53-year-old man remains in custody. His sentence begins on October 30.

After serving the majority of his 18-month sentence on remand, Mr Hoganson was automatically released after serving half of his sentence.

This came on the same day that 1,750 prisoners were released early as part of an emergency plan to free up prison beds.

The number of prisoners in Britain hit a record high of more than 88,500 in early September, meaning almost all prisons were full.

Offenders serving sentences of less than five years were released on probation after serving 40% of their sentence in prison, instead of the usual 50%.

Sex offenders and perpetrators of domestic violence, as well as violent offenders with a minimum prison sentence of four years, were excluded from the scheme.
