Due to recent changes in the law, Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling wishes to inform the public that under KSA 25-305, a person wishing to run for any county, state, or first-class city office must file a written statement of candidacy in order for the vote to be counted.

A First Class City is a city with more than 15,000 residents (all elections in cities in Ellis County are exempt from this provision).

The affidavit for national and state candidates must be filed with the Secretary of State. The affidavit for county and first class city candidates must be filed with the county election officer.

The deadline for filing the affidavits is the fourth Monday before Election Day: Monday, October 14 for the general election.

Write-in candidates for township office do not need to file an affidavit. All votes are counted in those races.

The Statement of Nomination by Written Application is available through the Kansas Secretary of State’s office or the county clerk’s office.

If you have any questions, please contact the Ellis County Clerk’s Office at 785-628-9410.
