Nokia says German court rules in its favor in patent dispute with Amazon: Reuters

ESPOO (dpa-AFX) – A German court has reportedly ruled in Nokia’s favor in a patent dispute with Amazon.com (AMZN). The court found that the e-commerce giant used the Finnish company’s patented video technology without a license.

According to Reuters, Nokia Chief Licensing Officer Arvin Patel said the Munich Regional Court ruled that Amazon used “Nokia’s patented video technologies in its end-user streaming devices” and illegally sold them without a proper license.

However, Amazon indicated that it disagrees with the court’s decision and said it expects a quick resolution, but did not provide specific details.

“This ruling has no impact on existing customers and a wide range of Fire TV devices remain available on Amazon,” the company said, according to Reuters.

Amazon noted that it had worked with several companies to license video patents, but claimed that Nokia was asking for more than everyone else combined. Amazon claimed the offer was fair and in line with market prices, but Nokia rejected it.

In July, Amazon filed a lawsuit against Nokia in a federal court in Delaware, accusing the Finnish company of infringing on a dozen Amazon patents related to cloud computing technology.

Nokia filed a lawsuit against Amazon in 2023 over the use of its patented multimedia inventions in Germany, India, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as in the European Patent Court.
