My 12 year old students all love Adam Sandler and shared their favorite movies

Look, I love Adam Sandler. You love Adam Sandler. We all I love Adam Sandler!

So why was I so shocked to discover that my students, all around the age of 12, also love Sandler? It was all because several of them interrupted my lesson to ask if I knew that he was recently at their local park.

Now I don’t know how accurate this observation is (maybe if he was around my school, he could have scouted a location for one of his upcoming films). But of course I was stunned that they even knew who Sandler was, let alone liked him. When I asked them what movies of his they liked, these were the ones they told me.

Lion

When Sandler signed a $250 million deal with Netflix back in 2014I never expected that number to increase significantly ten years later.

What I also never expected was that one of the films that would be produced with Netflix would be the 2023 animated film, Lion.

Lionwho was CinemaBlend’s very own Philip Sledge surprised by how much he enjoyed itis the story of a classmate who suddenly discovers that his life may end sooner rather than later. He decides to escape, only to discover that he might be better off where he started.

A couple of my students told me that this was their introduction to Adam Sandler, and that they loved the story at first, and then wondered who the voice of the lizard was. It makes sense that my high school students would like it too this family friendly filmbecause it’s crazy and has just the right amount of sweetness.

Also, the enemy is a grumpy old substitute teacher, so I imagine it will work with some of my students. I’m sure they’ve had a few while I’ve been gone.

Hotel Transylvania

Okay, so Lion was a bit surprising to me, as some of my students had learned about Sandler, but it made perfect sense that most of them had learned about Mr. Opera Man himself through his animated series, Hotel Transylvania.

That’s because the Hotel Transyvania movies (three of them voiced by Sandler) are a very popular franchise with four films, and they are about famous Hollywood monsters in crazy situations. What more could you want?

All the movies are a little different, but the basic idea is that Dracula owns a hotel for monsters, and that world is turned upside down when his secluded daughter falls in love with a human. Antics ensue. I can’t blame my students for liking this series, because I like it too!

In this 2015 film starring Chris Columbus, Sandler and a host of others battle aliens that have taken the form of old-school video games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, etc. In a scene after the storyit is implied that Josh Gad’s character has children with Q*Bert. It’s…interesting.

But what also amazes me is that 1) my students have even seen Pixelsand 2) some of them consider it their favorite Adam Sandler movie. We were especially nice to the movie in our reviewbut many critics the movie destroyedStill, some of my students love it, so it definitely has that.

Hubie Halloween

In this modern Halloween classic, the actor plays what many would consider a loser (something Sandler has starred in his best and worst films pretty good about his long career). He loves his town, but most people don’t. In fact, they laugh at him openly, and therefore don’t believe him when he thinks there’s a werewolf on the loose. But Hubie turns out okay at the end of this silly horror comedy.

I’ll be honest with you, not all Hubie Halloween works, but if it works, It Real do. The only student who chose this as her favorite Adam Sandler movie said she watches it every year on Halloween. She finds it “creepy, but not too creepy,” which I think any good horror comedy should be.

Adam Sandler wears a hat backwards in Happy Gilmore

Happy Gilmore

If you’re of a certain age, you’ve probably seen this 1996 classic. Sandler plays a hockey player who also has a knack for hitting golf balls like a pro. This is of course annoying to the arrogant “real” golfers who don’t like the fact that he has invaded their sport with his brash and unorthodox ways. Carl Weathers also stars. Rest in peace, Derick “Chubbs” Peterson.

If I was surprised that my students liked Sandler so much, I was even more surprised that a few of them actually liked Sandler. Happy Gilmoresince it was way before their time. When I asked them how they saw it, they had similar answers: Their fathers liked the movie.

And you know what? I think that’s cool. As a father, I can definitely show myself to my kids Happy Gilmore one day. But only when they are older.

Adults

I’m not the first to think this, but Adults seems like the kind of movie a celebrity makes when he can do whatever he wants and decides he just wants to make a movie with his friends.

How else can you explain this 2010 film with a wafer-thin plot about a dying coach and all the childhood friends just getting together to joke around for a little over an hour and a half?

Adults (which had a sequel in 2013) was one of my student’s favorite Sandler films, and what he liked most about it wasn’t even the star, but Kevin James (not even Chris Rock!), who he finds hilarious (he also really likes Here comes the Tree). So I think this student just likes Sandler by association, and that’s kind of cool, I guess.

Click

Click is a unique film, even by Adam Sandler standards. It’s the story of a workaholic who goes to Bed Bath & Beyond and buys a magical remote control that allows him to alter reality. Think of it as one of Thanos’ infinity stones, only much more mundane. With this power, he can fast-forward through the things he doesn’t like, only to discover that life—even when it sucks—is still worth living.

More than a few students said that Click was their favorite choice, and as Hotel TransylvaniaIt’s not hard to see why. The magic element makes this an interesting film, but it also has a nice message about not rushing through life and taking your time. It’s a good one.

Big Daddy

Lastly, my favorite Sandler movie (that is not Uncut gemstones)is Big Daddythe story of a man whose girlfriend doesn’t think he’s mature enough. He adopts a child to prove her wrong, but instead becomes more mature.

I’ll be honest with you: Big Daddy may not be holding up as well today as it did in the late 1990s (a bit like Shallow Hal early 2000s), because it feels a little misogynistic in this day and age. But I still have a certain nostalgic love for this film.

So, it was bizarre to me that one of my students liked it too, even though he couldn’t really put into words what he liked about it, other than that he thought it was funny. And, I agree!

Big Daddyis, despite all its flaws, still a very funny film and, in my opinion, a good choice for everyone’s favorite Sandler film.
