Roy Keane was unimpressed by Mikel Arteta’s reaction to Leandro Trossard’s red card at Manchester City on Sunday, telling the Arsenal manager to ‘show a bit of class’.

The Gunners drew 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium but were ultimately disappointed when the champions equalised in injury time thanks to a goal from John Stones.

The thrilling match was marked early in the game by Erling Haaland opening the scoring, before Riccardo Calafiori scored a stunning equaliser and Gabriel headed Arsenal into the lead.

The half-time whistle had not yet blown when Trossard was ordered to play. He was shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away after giving away a free kick.

Arteta was furious on the touchline and tried not to comment on the decision after the game, but he was clearly angry about the red card, which came just three weeks after Declan Rice was sent off in similar circumstances at Brighton.

“It’s very clear, I don’t need to talk about it. I think the red card is very clear, very clear what people think,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“It’s not my job to come here and judge what happened. My job is to survive in one of the most difficult environments in football, for 55 minutes, and try to get things done to survive.

‘The rest is not my job, but it has happened twice in five games. It is very worrying to see in the best competition, the Premier League.’

Arteta may think that everyone agrees with him, but that is not entirely true. Trossard has behaved particularly stupidly in the circumstances and he cannot really complain about it.

Keane says he was not aiming his comments solely at Arteta, but he asked managers to be a little less biased and honest in their assessments, rather than blindly defending their players.

“Wouldn’t it be good if a manager came out after a game and said, ‘Yeah, you know what, he was a bit stupid, it was a yellow card,'” Keane said.

‘Every manager comes out every week and says, “No, it wasn’t a foul, that wasn’t it, something happened five minutes earlier.” Just come out and be big enough… players do crazy things on a football pitch, come out and show a bit of class and say, “The referee gave him the chance to send him off. We’re disappointed but we move on.”

‘I understand he’s going to defend his corner, but every now and then you come out, and I don’t just mean Arteta, managers say every week that every decision is against them. Deep down he’ll be happy with a point. Just show a bit of class, manager of Arsenal, say he probably deserved the yellow card, but we reacted well, we are a big club, we move on quickly. But they keep saying “it’s a disgrace.” He said it a few weeks ago about Rice

‘Take your medicine, show some class, your team did well today, you’re proud of them and move on. Show some class.’
