Iranian Supreme Leader calls emergency meetings after Israeli attack on Nasrallah

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called emergency meetings late Friday evening after Israel launched a powerful airstrike on an underground compound in Beirut on Friday afternoon against Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Iran-backed terrorist group.

Khamenei convened the Supreme National Security Council meeting at his home compound, the first meeting since Israel assassinated Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.

Israeli intelligence services said in an initial assessment that they believed Nasrallah was killed in the attack, but warned that confirmation was still needed. Several other top Hezbollah, as well as possibly officials from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are also believed to have been killed in the attack.

The world’s top state sponsor of terrorism also called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, a group of 57 Muslim countries, in response to the attack.

The New York Times reported that while Iran responded to the attack by howling in public statements, they privately panicked over Hezbollah’s silence after the attack, believing it was a sign of bad news. Reuters reported that Nasrallah was “unreachable” after the attack, according to sources close to him.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry claimed the attacks were an “undeniable war crime,” even though Hezbollah, at Nasrallah’s direction, has fired thousands of missiles, rockets and drones in unprovoked attacks over the past year.

“Therefore, the US regime is without a doubt complicit with the Zionist regime and must be held accountable,” the statement said. “The continuation of the Zionist regime’s crimes against the people of Palestine and Lebanon clearly shows that the call for a ceasefire by the US and some Western countries is a blatant deception aimed at buying time to Zionist regime to continue its crimes against the people. of Palestine and Lebanon.”
