There’s been a lot of talk about tariffs lately, but some of it can be misleading. “Our trade policies work in tandem with our other economic policies,” said the Biden administration’s U.S. Trade Representative, Amb. Katherine Tai. Rates are part of that policy. Economists have criticized the possibility of blanket tariffs on all imported goods, but tariffs can be – and have been – a useful tool in economic and trade policy if used strategically. “Tariffs and trade can and should – in our view – be used as part of a strategy to grow the middle class and empower the working class,” Tai told Ali Velshi. “That is the basis from which we continue.”
