The first of seven public electric vehicle charging points that have been extensively modernized has reopened in Victoria.

The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) has rolled out new technology at its Ballarat site in the state’s west, unveiling new chargers.

The Curtis Street site now has two new 50 kW fast chargers and two new 350 kW ultra-fast units.

The chargers were offline due to several technical issues, including vandalism, which prompted the organization to add more security measures such as CCTV.

“The upgrades will not only provide a faster, more reliable charging experience, but also improve site safety,” said RACV General Manager of Energy Services Greg Edye.

The Ballarat site is the first of seven planned upgrades for the RACV and Chargefox, with work currently underway on a major charging station at Airport West near Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport until October 14.

Upcoming closures to carry out the upgrade will also take place at Barnawartha, Euroa, Horsham and Moe towards the end of the year.

The new technology is also coming to RACV’s Victorian Resorts and Club locations, with work on the Torquay charging station along the Great Ocean Road recently completed at the end of September.

Since September 30, the Airport West location has been out of use for two weeks during one of the busiest times of the year for travelers.

The Chargefox station at Airport West near Melbourne will remain closed until October 14, making the venue unavailable during the Victorian school holiday period and during the recent AFL Grand Final weekend.

Currently, the site, located in the Westfield Airport West shopping centre, has four 350 kW ultra-fast chargers and two 50 kW fast chargers.
