George on England’s next world-class star and why Farrell is rugby’s GOAT

England captain Jamie George firmly believes his former teammate Owen Farrell is the greatest rugby player of all time and is convinced the fly-half has the statistics to back up that claim.

The hooker and fly-half’s 15-year partnership for both Saracens and England came to an end this summer with Farrell’s move to Racing 92 in the Top 14, closing the book on years of success in north London.

It is because of that success in both the black of Saracens and the white of England that George feels his former England captain is the GOAT.

The 93-cap international expressed this opinion about Danny Care’s Hits different podcast, in which he said Saracens would not have won anything without Farrell.

“I really think Owen Farrell should be the talking point,” George said when discussing rugby’s GOAT.

“I just think you have to look at what he won, what he did in the game. I don’t know many other players who have done as well at home and abroad as he has.

‘So he’s had six Prems, three Europeans, 112 England caps, many as captain, and three Lions tours.

“It’s just ridiculous really, and I can confidently say that Sarries wouldn’t have won anything if he hadn’t played.”

The number 10 was recruited by the Parisian giants to emulate the kind of success he has enjoyed at the StoneX Stadium, but it remains a question mark as to whether he will ever win more silverware with England as the 33-year-old is currently ineligible. to represent his country.

However, he may get another taste of international rugby at the end of this season as the British & Irish Lions tour Australia, led by Andy Farrell as head coach.

Farrell is just one of many world-class players George has worked with throughout his career, and he believes many more will appear for England.

The hooker highlighted his current England teammate Tommy Freeman as a player who is close to world class and will rise to that echelon in the near future.

The 23-year-old eleven cap has established himself as one of England’s starters in 2024, although his captain believes he didn’t ‘put it together’ earlier in his career. However, things have changed and the Northampton Saint is now part of the young contingent leading the new England team under Steve Borthwick.

“He’s been around for a while, but I think Tommy Freeman is almost world class,” George said on the podcast.

“He’s so sweet, he’s such a great guy, but sometimes he’s kind of a space cadet.

“When he first played you thought ‘that guy is huge, athletic’, but he hadn’t quite put it together yet. If you were to put him up against the majority of wingers in the world right now, you’d be very happy in a one-on-one situation.

“So I think he’s really almost world class.”
