David de Gea literally handed Fiorentina victory over AC Milan on Sunday with two breathtaking penalty saves.

Goals from Yacine Adli and Albert Gudmundsson secured the points for the hosts, with Milan only able to score one goal thanks to Christian Pulisic.

The American midfielder equalized in the 60th minute after Adli struck just before half-time, but not before Tammy Abraham and Theo Hernández had penalties saved by the former Man United shot-stopper.

The match had actually started when Milan keeper Mike Maignan saved a penalty struck by Moise Kean in the 22nd minute.

Adli broke the deadlock for Fiorentina with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area that found its way into the net via the far post ten minutes before half-time.

On the hour mark, Christian Pulisic equalized with a perfect volley into the net from a precise cross, before Gudmundsson’s goal in the 73rd minute put Fiorentina back in front.

Emotions ran high in the final moments of a tense match as Fiorentina coach Raffaele Palladino was sent off for protesting, while Milan’s Hernandez was also shown a red card in extra time for arguing with the referee.

In the aftermath, Fonseca was unequivocal in his assessment of the penalties imposed on both sides.

‘I don’t like to talk about referees, but this is not football. Football is about contact and a single touch should not be enough to award a penalty,” he told DAZN.

‘A simple touch can result in a penalty; We saw that this weekend too. It makes everyone nervous, and that causes problems: this is football, not a circus.’

Incredibly, this wasn’t the only match this weekend to see a former Premier League goalkeeper’s heroics involve a penalty save.

Ex-Spurs, Southampton and Fulham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga saved no fewer than three penalties in a LaLiga match between Girona and Athletic Bilbao.

The Argentina goalkeeper denied three separate Athletic players would see a dramatic home win over Girona 2-1, with their winning goal scored deep into stoppage time – by way of penalty.

Gazzaniga saved a penalty in the Champions League on Wednesday in a 3-2 defeat at home to Feyenoord.
