Safety and security threats to the transportation sector and to border security

Safety and security threats to the transportation sector and to border security

The potential threats to critical infrastructure, transportation networks and border security from terror and cross-border crime remain constant and significant. Since the dawn of the new millennium and following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, the relevance of developing a strategic approach to prevent terrorism and deter cross-border crime has become even clearer and more important. These factors are complex and span a wide variety of key sectors: critical and metropolitan infrastructure; bridges and tunnels; residential roads; commuting; passenger flights; commercial railways; commercial shipping; the trucking industry; passenger cruise lines; national railways and buses; border and airport security; transnational human and contraband trafficking; and corruption within border and customs enforcement organizations. These important issues will be explored in depth from the United States perspective, followed by an overview of proposals to improve public safety and security in these arenas.
