Adelaide Zoo mourns the loss of beloved lion couple Mujambi and Amani, who were euthanized after a long bond

Adelaide Zoo is mourning the loss of its lion pair after a heartbreaking decision was made to euthanize both animals following the end of their long bond.

Mujambi, a 19-year-old man, suffered a medical episode over the weekend, Adelaide Zoo said.

Despite the dedicated efforts of the zoo’s veterinary team, the decision was made to humanely euthanize him to prevent further suffering.

Shortly afterwards, 23-year-old Amani, Australia’s oldest lioness, was also put to sleep.

Zoo officials said the negative impact on her well-being without her partner outweighed the benefits of keeping the lioness alive.

In a statement, the zoo said the decision was “the most difficult but kindest” choice to ensure the dignity and comfort of both lions in their final moments.

“Choosing when it is the right to say goodbye to an animal is a hardship but also a blessing,” said Dr. Phil Ainsley, director of the Adelaide Zoo.

“In addition to the complex ethics surrounding euthanasia and Zoos SA’s commitment to ensuring the best welfare for the animals in our care, we must also consider species-specific behavior.

“In the case of lions, they are a social species, and the likelihood of safely relocating or integrating Amani into another pride or environment was considered too risky and stressful.”

Mujambi, who was known for his striking mane and gentle behavior, and Amani shared a deep bond after living together at the zoo for many years.

The zoo said it was now focused on honoring their legacy and supporting staff who cared deeply about the couple.

Located in the parks just north of the city centre, Adelaide Zoo is Australia’s second oldest zoo and operates on a not-for-profit basis.

More information is expected to be provided at a media call at the Adelaide Zoo on Thursday afternoon.
