Modern hockey facility on the map – President Ali

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, during a visit to his Alma Mater Saints Stanislaus College on Tuesday, October 8, outlined that a system will be put in place to help the country realize the dream of a modern hockey facility.
Saint Stanislaus College, which boasts the most vibrant youth hockey program in the country, together with the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), has been pushing for a home for the sport for decades.
Dr. Ali says he has already had discussions about this with the chairman of the board of directors of Saints Stanislaus College.

“I have spoken to Chris Fernandes to see how our new sports facility can be developed into a world class facility and we cannot have a world class facility in every area of sport but we know that in that facility we will have our first international standard hockey field.”
The Head of State says it will require a significant investment, but he is committed to working with partners to achieve this goal.

“To do this, we need almost $500,000. USD equivalent to 100 million Guyanese dollars, the government is committed to being on board and I am sure if we all pull together, we will increase this and create a sports infrastructure. We are investing in a facility that will be unparalleled nationally.”

President Ali says all hands must be on deck and there must be a sense of personal pride if they want to build something together with other stakeholders.
Saints Stanislaus College has been given possession of a piece of land in the Durban Park area that has already been fenced and earmarked for the development of a hockey pitch.

Guyana has long found it difficult to compete internationally because the sport is played exclusively on artificial turf, making it faster and more attractive. Therefore, when our national teams attend regional or international outdoor competitions, they struggle to acclimatize quickly and have not been able to achieve their full success.
