Former Prime Minister Willies Mchunu becomes leader of the MKP in KZN

Mchunu recently resigned from the ANC, saying the party was unable to implement policies that would benefit the working class.

MK Party Secretary General Sifiso Maseko made the announcement during a media briefing on Friday.

Shortly after the announcement, Mchunu said the ANC could no longer meet his ambitions.

“My reason for joining the MK Party is that it is the people’s choice, and it is also my choice. It is the only home and the only future for the working class people,” Mchunu said.

The party received the highest share of votes in KZN at 45.3 percent during the May general election.

Compared to the 2019 elections, the ANC lost a significant amount of support, from an outright majority of 54.2% to 17%.

Maseko said Mchunu will help the party take over government in KZN.

“From now on, all members of the MK Party in the province must submit to the leadership of Comrade Mchunu. The appointment of Comrade Mchunu as Chairman means that all structures that previously existed will cease to exist.”

“Our comrade will take the leading role in undoing the devastating impact of the right-wing DA and IFP government. KZN deserves a progressive government that is not associated with apartheid.”

“We can assure the people of KZN that we will form a responsible government in the near future,” Mchunu added.
