Chris Eubank Jr vs Canelo Alvarez restarts talks: ‘That fight can definitely take place within a year’ | Boxing News

Talks have resumed for Chris Eubank Jr. to fight Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.

After scoring an impressive revenge victory over Liam Smith last year, Eubank Jr returned to action this month with a victory over Kamil Szeremeta.

He is now looking for big name opponents and Canelo is one of his targets.

“That fight could absolutely happen within a year,” Eubank Jr. said Air sports. “He doesn’t have the amount of fighters available – there are no more names that fight fans want to see.

“After (David) Benavidez, there are no other guys. Maybe (Artur) Beterbiev and (Dmitry) Bivol, but they’re not in his weight class and he probably wouldn’t stand up for those guys.

“Me and Canelo would be a great build-up. Two very different personalities, very different backgrounds. That would be a lot of fun. It will be a lot of fun.”

A fight with Alvarez has previously been discussed and Eubank Jr.’s promoter Ben Shalom revealed that those talks have restarted.

Once Conor Benn has his boxing license reinstated, he would also be an option for Eubank Jr. Benn is currently under provisional suspension for an anti-doping violation.

“For me, the two fights for me are Canelo and Conor Benn. We’ve already started small conversations around the Canelo fight,” Shalom said. Air sports.

“Obviously that (Canelo fight) was close last time. I believe this is a fight that interests Canelo. You can imagine the press conference in Britain and the US would be absolutely huge.

“I think Canelo needs dance partners, but he also needs stars. I don’t think his last few opponents have been the biggest stars and Chris Eubank Jr. is definitely a big star.

“If he ever fights in Britain, that would be the fight and Wembley Stadium would be sold out. That’s No. 1 on the list for me.”

Canelo is one of boxing’s most established champions, having only lost to Dmitry Bivol in recent years, outside his natural weight class to light-heavy. But Eubank Jr believes he can scare the Mexican big.

“No one gets under my skin. Everyone has tried, everyone has failed,” Eubank Jr. said.

“He likes everything to go smoothly, he doesn’t like trash talk or disrespect. You can’t give an edge, you have to win every fight before the real fight starts, but no one is better at mind games and mental games.” edges than me.”

At an advanced stage in his own career, Eubank Jr. believes still believes he can become one of the biggest names in British boxing in his own right.
