Clif Bars has filed a $12 million lawsuit over “deceptive” protein bars. Are you eligible for compensation?

Clif Bars has filed a million lawsuit over “deceptive” protein bars. Are you eligible for compensation?

The company behind Clif Bars was hit with a $12 million lawsuit, claiming the nutritional information on the packaging of its protein bars was “misleading.”

Cliff Bar & Co. settled for $12 million in the case of Ralph Milan et al. v. Clif. Bar & Co., which was initially filed in 2018, alleging that the labeling of Clif Bar products failed to disclose large amounts of added sugar in the protein bars.

Everyone who bought the snack bars between March 31, 2019 and March 31, 2023is eligible for a settlement. California and New York residents are more likely to be eligible, from April 19, 2014 to March 31, 2023.

According to the class action lawsuit, the following sentences are cited as examples of misleading statements:

Cliff bars

  • “Food for sustainable energy”

Clif Kid ZBars

  • “No high fructose corn syrup”
  • “Feeding children in motion”
  • “While raising our family, finding nutritious snacks for our children was not easy. That’s why we created Clif Kid: healthy, delicious snacks made with organic ingredients to help kids continue, grow and explore.”
  • “A mix of carbohydrates, fiber, proteins and fats gives children energy so they can keep digging and zooming.”

Clif Bar denied that its products are unhealthy or that it used misleading language on the packaging of its products, even though the company agreed to a settlement earlier this year.

Here’s how to file a claim if you qualify for a settlement.

How to make a claim

Customers who purchased the bars nationwide between the dates mentioned above are eligible for a cash settlement.

Expected payment is based on the number of bars purchased and does not require proof of purchase.

The payout levels are as follows:

  • $5 for up to 30 bars
  • $10 for 31 to 60 bars
  • $15 for over 60 bars

However, if customers provide proof of purchase when submitting a request, they can receive the $15 for 60 bars, plus an additional $0.25 for each additional bar. The maximum payout is $50.
