Hoshiarpur:

A government school teacher here was charged under the POCSO Act for allegedly inappropriately touching a 12-year-old student of his in class, police said on Wednesday.

The English teacher allegedly called the girl during her lunch break in the school’s Art and Craft room, where he was teaching classes instead of in a regular classroom, police said.

The incident took place on October 19, when the teacher called the Class 7 girl into the room, offered her a banana to eat and made inappropriate comments, police said.

He then allegedly held her by the waist and pulled her toward him, they said.

The girl reported the incident to the math teacher and her parents, who filed a complaint with the police.

The teacher was charged under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, police said.

Sub-inspector Ramandeep Kaur said raids are underway to arrest the teacher, who is absconding.
