Whoopi Goldberg says she’s a “working class” person living through “tough” times

The view Co-host Whoopi Goldberg said Tuesday that she is part of the working class, adding that she would not co-host the talk show if she could financially afford not to.

Goldberg and her co-hosts discussed a recent social media post from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in which she asked people why they chose to vote for President-elect Donald Trump, receiving responses asking both her as Trump called “outsiders” from the founding Washington, DC, who care about “the working class.” Co-host Ana Navarro suggested the next Democratic presidential candidate should make a name for himself before running for office to gain recognition among voters. Goldberg then claimed that Trump had been running for “12 years.”

“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me too, I work for a living,” Goldberg said. “If I had all the money in the world, I wouldn’t be here. OK? So I’m a working person, and my child has to feed her family, and my great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family.

The co-host’s net worth is estimated at $60 million. Additionally, it was reported in 2016 that her annual salary for co-hosting the show was approximately $5 million to $6 million.

Goldberg claimed that while she is aware that “it’s tough out there,” most voters chose to ignore issues outside their financial security. She added that something “that affects everyone” should not be prioritized over issues “that endanger 85% of other people.”

Before Goldberg’s claim that she is part of the working class, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin praised Ocasio-Cortez’s offer to hear from others about why they chose to support Trump. She also suggested that financially struggling voters were irritated by politicians who insisted the economy was better off under President Joe Biden and therefore chose to support Trump despite thinking “he’s a jerk.”
