Lamborghini puts the World Endurance Championship program on hold

Lamborghini puts the World Endurance Championship program on hold

Lamborghini competes in both the IMSA SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship with its SC63 LMDh and Huracán GT3 racing cars.

However, the automaker announced on November 22 that it will introduce its World Endurance Championship program on hold next season.

In a statement, Lamborghini said the new WEC rules, which require at least two cars to compete in the Premier Hypercar class, in which Lamborghini competes with the SC63, are not in line with the current strategy.

Lamborghini has not indicated when or if it plans to return to the WEC with its SC63. However, the SC63 will still compete in the first GTP class of the SportsCar Championship next season, allowing Lamborghini to further develop the car.

Lamborghini also stated that it will withdraw from the lower LMGT3 class of the WEC next season, where it previously competed with the Huracán GT3. This decision allows the automaker to focus on developing a replacement GT3 race car based on the recently unveiled Temerario, the V-8 plug-in hybrid supercar which succeeds the Huracan.

The new Temerario GT3 race car is currently undergoing testing and is expected to be unveiled next year.

Lamborghini’s current partner in the WEC, Iron Lynx, will team up with Mercedes-Benz AMG in the LMGT3 class next season. It will be the first time that AMG participates in the WEC with a racing car based on its GT sports car.

Another new entrant to the WEC next season is the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH, which will compete in the Hypercar class. Aston Martin does field the Valkyrie in partnership with America’s Heart of Racing.
