Belgian inflation falls to lowest point in 7 months

BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT/PARIS (dpa-AFX) – Belgian consumer price inflation fell for the second month in a row in August to a seven-month low, according to figures from the statistics office published on Thursday.

The consumer price index rose by 2.86 percent year-on-year in August, slower than the 3.74 percent increase in July.

Moreover, this was the lowest inflation since January, when prices rose by 1.75 percent.

Annual energy price growth slowed significantly to 6.96 percent from 14.01 percent in July. Health care costs rose at a slower pace of 3.2 percent in August, compared to a 3.6 percent increase a month ago.

Food inflation was just 0.04 percent in August, compared to 0.54 percent in July.

Excluding energy and unprocessed food, core inflation was 2.73 percent, compared with 3.04 percent in July.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices showed a flat development.
