A grade 12 pupil was allegedly chased in a car and shot dead by a group of five cow guards on August 23. They thought the boy was a cattle dealer, police reported Tuesday.

All five suspects – Saurabh, Anil Kaushik, Varun, Krishna and Adesh – have been arrested, police said.

During interrogation, the suspects revealed that on the evening of August 23, they had received information that some suspected cattle smugglers were conducting reconnaissance in the city in two SUVs. They mistook the victim, Aryan Mishra, and his friends, Shanky and Harshit, for the cattle smugglers and followed their car for about 30 kilometres near the Gadhpuri toll road on the Delhi-Agra National Highway, a senior police official said.

The accused told the police that when they asked the victim’s car to stop, the driver accelerated, after which they opened fire and Mishra was shot dead near Gadhpuri toll plaza in Palwal, the police officer said.

All suspects have been remanded in custody after their court appearance, he said. The illegal weapon and car used in the crime have also been seized.

Police say further investigations are underway.
