Hightstown High will induct its 30th Hall of Fame class on Sept. 13 – Trentonian

Hightstown High School has been celebrating its athletes for years and on September 13, the 30th Hall of Fame class will be inducted.

It’s another great crop of legendary Rams who proudly wear the blue and white and represent the school on and off the playing fields.

This year’s inductees include: Cheryl Wolf — Staff Writer; Herb Roberts ’66 — Football; Harold Brown ’91 — Basketball; Liz Carr Hovemeyer ’96 — Football; Brian Kaiser ’05 — Football; Mike Demko ’06 — Track and Field; and the 1988-89 boys’ basketball team.

The celebratory luncheon will be held at the Holiday Inn, 339 Monmouth St., beginning at 11 a.m. The introductions will be at 6:30 p.m. with the soccer game against Steinert.

Cheryl Wolf is an individual who has dedicated her entire life to supporting administrators, teachers and students in various roles at high schools, colleges and universities.

She came to Hightstown High as an administrative assistant in the athletic department under athletic director Gary Bushelli. In addition to being an assistant, Wolf became the field hockey coach when the school needed a coach for its freshman team. She served in that role for five years.

When Jim Peto became athletic director, he was glad to have an experienced person like Wolf in the office. After Peto passed away in January 2021, Wolf, with the help of director Dennis Vinson, kept the athletic department office and all athletic programs running until a new athletic director took over seven months later.

Herb Roberts is another outstanding football player from the 1960s who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Roberts was coached by Hall of Famer Russ Beaulieu in his second year and by Hall of Famer Stan Czenis in his third and fourth years.

In his sophomore year, his team won the Group 2 state championship and in his junior year, he won the Group 1 state championship. Playing right halfback, Roberts was co-captain of the team his senior year, which finished as a state semifinalist. In both his junior and senior years, he received All-Area recognition from the Trentonian. In his senior year, Roberts was named 3rd Team All-State.

Harv Brown is one of six Hightstown boys basketball players to score 1,000 or more points in school history. He scored his 1,000th point in the final game of the season against Trenton High.

He played for Hall of Fame coach Ray Clark for three years.

He is also a member of the 1988-89 basketball team that is being inducted this year. During his junior year, Brown led the team in rebounds, blocked shots, had a 61% field goal average, and scored 17.7 points per game. During his senior year, Brown was co-captain of the team and scored 22.7 points per game, with a shooting average of 48.2%. Brown earned First Team All-County Honors from the Trentonian and Second Team All-County Honors from the Trenton Times.

Liz Carr Hovemeyer excelled in soccer, basketball and track. She won numerous awards during her high school years, but on the soccer field she was a true Hall of Fame player.

She played on the soccer team for three years and was captain of the team her senior year. She led the team to the CVC championship in 1995. Her impressive performances earned her a first-team selection by The Trentonian and The Trenton Times, a first-team selection at CVC, and All-State Honors.

Additionally, she was an alternate for the All-Star Team her senior year. Carr Hovemeyer also received the Hibernian Soccer Award, was named a Mercer 33 Selection and won the Jersey Area Girls Soccer Scholarship.

On the basketball court, she played varsity for three years, and was captain of the team her senior year. She also competed in track and field, receiving the Athlete of the Year award her senior year.

Brian Kaiser is inducted into the Hall of Fame as an exceptional linebacker who also played offense and led the 2005 CVC Patriot Division title.

Kaiser also competed in spring track and field, where he set a school record in the 4×100-meter relay.

In his junior year, Kaiser had 115 tackles, six sacks, four interceptions, and caused six fumbles. On offense, he carried the ball for 245 yards and scored four touchdowns. As a senior captain, he rushed for 330 yards, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.

As a linebacker, he had 122 tackles, five sacks, three interceptions, and caused five fumbles. These outstanding performances led to Kaiser being named First Team All-CVC Defense by the Trentonian and Trenton Times and All-Area Linebacker by the Trenton Times. In addition, Kaiser was named First Team All-Decade (2000-2010) Team as a linebacker.

Michael Demko was inducted into the Hall of Fame as one of the best sprinters to ever ride for Hightstown.

Demko was a three-time Mercer County Champion and holds seven school records in track and field. As a sophomore, he was a key contributor to the 2004 Valley Division championship team and a Mercer County champion as a member of the 4×400 relay team.

Demko was the Mercer County Champion in the 200m and was named First Team All-CVC for the 200m. That season he was also named Third Team All-South Jersey (Star-Ledger) for the 55m.

In his junior year, he was the Mercer County Champion in the 55m and was named First Team All-CVC for the 55m. In his senior year, Demko was the Mercer County Champion in the 200m and was named First Team All-CVC for the 200m. That season, he was also named Third Team All-South Jersey (Star-Ledger) for the 55m.

He competed in the Meet of Champions and won First Team All-CVC Honors for the third time.

The 1988-89 boys basketball team set the school record for most wins in program history: 21.

They won the West Windsor-Plainsboro Garden State Land Group Holiday Tournament, placed first in the Mercer County Tournament, placed second in the CVC and qualified for the NJSIAA state tournament.

Led by Hall of Famer Ray Clark and assistant coaches John Mariano and Dominic Mastroianni, the team finished 21-6.

The team was led by Captains, Randal Pinkett and Bill Holup. Team members included Mark Borosko, Harold Brown, Jeremy Glasser-Hyman, Mike Gumpert, Erik Hauck, Craig Mason, James Parrish, Layton Parrish, Phil Sitton, Gregg Stewart, Ed Walsh, Joe Witter and Jay Witter. Managers for the team were Rori Felt, Jermaine Fair, Kaie Uudna Zanghi and Lori Engelhardt.
