Patrick Mahomes’ supporting players stun fans in Chiefs win as Kelce, Worthy, Rice shine | News, scores, highlights, stats & rumors

Last season, Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs offense to another Super Bowl title as his receiving corps, outside of superstar tight end Travis Kelce, didn’t do him much good.

The 2024 season started very differently.

Rookie Xavier Worthy scored two touchdowns, Rashee Rice had seven catches for 103 yards and Kansas City fans helped Mahomes and the Chiefs open the season with a 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

It was a testament to Worthy (two catches for 47 yards and a score; one carry for 21 yards and a touchdown) and Rice that Kelce had a relatively quiet night (three catches for 34 yards) and the Chiefs still performed well on offense.

And that, combined with the fact that Marquise Brown wasn’t even on the field due to injury, had fans and pundits excited about the benefits of this new offense. That, and maybe also scared for the rest of the NFL:

Rashee Rice & Xaiver Worthy is a problem 🗣️ don’t forget Hollywood Brown is not here tonight!!! The competition is in trouble

Granted, the Chiefs needed every inch of the end zone to secure the win.

In the final game, Isaiah Likely appeared to have hauled in a touchdown reception that would have either forced overtime on the extra point or a two-point conversion for a potential Ravens victory. However, replays showed his foot just barely touching the end line, making it an incomplete pass:

The #Chieftains win a classic opener with a toe. Game 1 — unreal. Bring on the rest.

And that, folks, is how you open an NFL season: with a heavy dose of intrigue and drama.

But if Kansas City’s supporting cast proves to be as dynamic as it was Thursday night, the 2024 season could quickly feel like a foregone conclusion. If Mahomes can lead the team to a title with a group of receivers who dropped passes at an alarming rate last season, what could he do with someone who has that level of big-play ability?

Win a third straight title, that’s what. NFL defenders be warned.
