Week 5 Hollis Wright Player of the Week is a familiar name at the top of the poll

Hollis Wright Player of the Week for the Birmingham region for Week 5 is the first player to receive the most votes twice, having also topped the poll last week.

Leeds quarterback Conner Nelson walked away with the vote on 76 percent of the 57,132 ballots cast in the poll. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder rushed 12 times for 189 yards — that’s 15.75 yards per carry — and five touchdowns as the fourth-ranked Class 5A Green Wave defeated Jacksonville 42-13 to improve to 5-0 on the year. Nelson also completed 7-of-11 passes for 90 yards.

Nelson’s victory, which received 43,379 votes, is also the second for his school.

Vincent linebacker Grayson Gulde finished second in the voting with 9 percent of the total. The 5-9, 190-pounder, who also plays offensive line, had 19 tackles and an interception in a 29-6 win over Sulligent. The 4-0 Yellow Jackets are in sixth place in Class 2A.

Hewitt-Trussville Deuce Alston earned 3 percent of the vote and finished third. The junior running back rushed 12 times for 106 yards and a touchdown in a 47-16 Class 7A, Region 3 rout of Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. The Huskies are in sixth place with a 4-1 record this season.

This fall, keep an eye out for the weekly nominations on Sundays and cast your vote each week.
