The 16-year-old high school student had been on a solo spearfishing trip near the popular tourist town of Montego Bay, local police said.

He disappeared on Monday, sparking a desperate search for the teenager.

His mutilated body was found on Tuesday morning. Shocked witnesses told the Jamaica Observer that the teenager’s body had been badly mutilated in the attack.

Jahmari’s father, Michael Reid, was heartbroken on the beach when divers brought the body back to shore.

The taxi driver said, “I can’t believe he went to the sea alone and this was the outcome. Sad to know. I feel so bad.”

Michael says he had warned his son about the dangers of spearfishing alone before the tragedy.

Fisherman Christopher Reynolds was with a group of local residents at the beach with the grieving father.

According to him, divers claimed to have seen a huge tiger shark in the water near where Jahmari’s body was found.

This led them to assume that the rare shark they had seen was the cause of the attack.

Reynolds added: “All the fishermen went out there and as they were diving to get him they saw the big shark.

“They shot at him, but they couldn’t catch him.”

According to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File, this is only the fourth time an unprovoked shark attack has resulted in a death in Jamaica.

Fritz Christie, chairman of the Falmouth Fisherfolks Benevolent Society, said it was the first time the wild beasts had killed people in Trelawny waters.

Locals suspect the shark followed a cruise ship into the bay.

Fritz told local media: “We have to make sure that diving is done carefully when the ships arrive.

“The shark eats the man’s head off, eats one of his hands off. It’s crazy, man.”

This news comes after a 15-year-old girl lost her leg earlier this month when a shark attacked her while diving off the coast of Belize.

Annabelle Carlson was flown to hospital by helicopter after being bitten by a shark while on vacation.
