49ers’ Ricky Pearsall shot during attempted robbery; suspect arrested

Politics

49ers rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in downtown San Francisco on Saturday afternoon.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced on X that Pearsall had been shot in the city’s Union Square area during an attempted robbery. Breed added that San Francisco police immediately responded to the scene and the suspect had been arrested.

NBC Bay Area reported that Pearsall is in stable condition.

The Niners selected Pearsall with the 31st pick in April’s NFL draft, out of the University of Florida.

Harris, Trump Both -120

Former US President and current GOP candidate Donald Trump is now tied with current Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, each at -110. Harris was alone at -120 with Trump at +100.

The chances are slim now that Trump is changing his mind about the fetus, as the Drudge Report noted.

Donald Trump indicated Thursday that he would support a referendum to overturn Florida’s six-week abortion ban. His campaign, however, tried to repeal it, in yet another failed attempt to find middle ground on the issue.

Seeking to undermine Democrats’ favorability among women, the Republican presidential candidate also unveiled a sweeping proposal to provide federal funding for in vitro fertilization or force insurers to pay for the expensive procedure.

Trump said Florida’s six-week abortion ban is too restrictive and doesn’t give women enough time to undergo the procedure.

The rise of legal gambling contributes to ugly fan behavior towards athletes

The New York Post published an article on Saturday about the growing threat to athletes as angry fans lose their bets.

From Phil Mushnick of the Post:

What do you think is the cause of the escalation of humiliation, threats and unbridled hatred on “social” media directed at professional tennis players? What do you think is the cause of the escalation of humiliation, threats and unbridled hatred on “social” media directed at professional tennis players?

Well, is it logical to note that the hatred coincides with the rise of legal sports betting? All sports have reported increased rudeness from “fans” due to their lack of success through the growth and promotion of gambling. Why should tennis be any different than golf, basketball, and soccer?

Either way, there will always be easily irritated idiots among us, but digital instant messaging and legalised betting that benefits the sport financially are helping to loosen the nuts from their bolts.

Mushnick also pointed to Bob Costas’ refusal to mention gambling incentives between innings of Major League Baseball games. Costas has admitted to working as a bookie in high school.

The increase in threats to athletes from gambling has led some state regulators to take drastic measures. A few states no longer allow betting on college players’ props. Still other states ban aggressive individuals from attending games.
