41 killed in single Russian airstrike, Ukraine says

  • An airstrike on Poltava, Ukraine, has killed 41 people, the president said.
  • Ukrainian officials reported that two Russian ballistic missiles had hit the city.
  • The death toll is much higher than most individual Russian airstrikes on Ukraine.

Russia has killed at least 41 people and wounded 180 in an airstrike on Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday.

Two ballistic missiles hit the city of Poltava, Zelenskyy said, citing preliminary information.

He said the figures on deaths and injuries were also provisional.

They are much larger than the regular Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the attack was so deadly because it was unexpected and occurred before people could evacuate.

According to Zelenskyy, the attack hit a military communications center, a medical facility and an unnamed educational institution.

The Ukrainian Military Institute of Communications is located in Poltava.
