Parents urged to limit texting during school hours under new policy – SteinbachOnline.com

As students in the Hanover School Division begin the new school year, middle and senior students are seeing a big change in the way cell phones are used at school. It can be a big adjustment for their parents, too.

This year, all schools in the division are implementing new rules on cell phone use to help students concentrate and learn better.

Under a new Manitoba province rule, which goes into effect this year, all schools must limit cell phone use to reduce distractions and keep students safe.

For pupils in groups 1 to 8, this means that they must leave their mobile phones at home.

Deputy Headmaster Colin Campbell explains that this change helps to create a learning environment where younger students can fully concentrate on their schoolwork.

High school students in grades 9-12 will also have new cell phone rules. They will not be allowed to use their phones during class, but they will be allowed to use them during recess and lunch. Teachers will be allowed to allow cell phone use in the classroom if it is necessary for learning.

The department also asks parents not to text their high school students during class to minimize distractions.

In his August 27, 2024, report to the Hanover School Board, Campbell reported having positive conversations with school principals, who indicated they were optimistic about the changes.

He noted that while there will be some bumps as everyone gets used to the new expectations, staff is ready to help students adjust to the current policy regarding cell phone use.

There will be exceptions for students who require cell phones for medical reasons or other special needs. Schools will ensure these students receive the support they need, while focusing on reducing distractions for everyone.

Parents and guardians who have questions about the new cell phone rules can contact their child’s school principal.
