Officials in Gaza reported that more than a dozen Palestinians were killed overnight by Israeli airstrikes. The US administration hopes that a more detailed ceasefire will take days.

The top US negotiator on Gaza, who is also director of the CIA, said the time has come for “tough choices”.

But instead of easing tensions, recent days have seen an upsurge in violence in the West Bank, with a 13-year-old girl and an American protester shot dead in separate incidents.
