Erik Ten Hag confirms Tyrell Malacia expected to return from injury ‘soon’

Erik Ten Hag has admitted he expects Tyrell Malacia to return to action for Manchester United soon.

The 25-year-old joined from Feyenoord two years ago, but in a year in which he had many injuries, he missed more than 50 games.

Malacia’s knee injury has kept him out for 423 days and with Luke Shaw also struggling, Ten Hag has been forced to field a makeshift defensive line.

Lisandro Martinez has been called upon to fill the left-back position on occasion, with Sergio Reguilon, who was forced out on loan last season, also lending a hand.

However, according to Ten Hag, Malacia is on the right track to make his long-awaited comeback ‘soon’.

“He is making great strides”, Ten Hag told reporters on Friday.

“So we think we can expect him in the team training in the short term, and he is a talent, that is logical. I also expect him to be able to play again soon.”

Although Saturday afternoon’s kick-off against Southampton comes too early for United’s young No. 12, fans could still see him back in the squad for the Red Devils’ upcoming Europa League match against FC Twente (September 25).
