Pitt Commit Omari Witherspoon Skyrockets in Rankings

247 Sports released the updated rankings for the 2025 class last week, minutes before Omari Witherspoon committed to Pitt.

Witherspoon chose the Panthers over Maryland and Vanderbilt. Earlier this summer, the 6-foot-4 guard wasn’t exactly on the radar of the big players. However, with a big summer draft pick, he caught the attention of many big-name coaches and scouts.

In the last rankings update for 247, the scouting team had Witherspoon as the 104th prospect in the country — a four-star. Witherspoon moved up a whopping 87 spots in the 247 rankings, from 191st previously. He now has an overall rating of 90 from 247.

“…If you see him with his Saint John’s team, then obviously you see him with his AAU team DC Premier, he’ll do a lot of the ball handling, the majority of it,” said Colby Giacubeno of 247 PSN on Witherspoon’s game. “Saint John’s, he’s going to split it up. That’s where you really see the versatility. That’s where a lot of the big programs saw his value. The modern era of basketball, what teams emphasize. It’s versatility, positionless basketball, and that’s what Omari brings. He’s just an efficient playmaker. He’s got the size at the guard position, and then just really good instincts off the ball defensively. Presence on the glass. Just kind of a jack-of-all-trades guy that just needs to get polished in pretty much every area that a lot of freshmen do…”

Pitt is still looking for other guards to add to the class, including Meleek Thomas, Derek Dixon, Amari Evans and others.
