Victims of 23andMe data breach benefit from $30 million settlement

(Gray News) – Genetic testing company 23andMe has agreed to pay $30 million to people affected by a data breach last year.

The settlement follows a class action lawsuit filed against the company in October.

‘Threat actors’ used approximately 14,000 accounts to gain access to the ancestry data of 6.9 million connected profiles.

The lawsuit alleged that 23andMe did not do enough to protect user data and failed to notify affected customers in a timely manner.

The settlement ends allegations that the company failed to tell customers with Chinese and Jewish ancestry that the hacker specifically targeted them and posted their data on the dark web to sell, Reuters reported.

As part of the agreement, 23andMe admitted no wrongdoing.

In addition to the payments, the settlement would also allow customers to sign up for an additional monitoring service, HIPAA Journal reported.

The deal still awaits final approval from a judge.
