Three cups of coffee a day can be good for your health, research shows

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – Many previous studies have portrayed coffee as harmful to health. However, scientists from Soochow University in China have discovered that moderate coffee and caffeine consumption can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

To reach these conclusions, scientists analyzed data from 500,000 Britons aged 37 to 73. Participants’ cardiometabolic disease outcomes were identified using self-reported medical conditions, primary care records, hospital admission records and death register data.

They found that moderate coffee consumption and the risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases were inversely associated during the study period.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that individuals who consumed three cups of coffee per day under 100 grams had a 48.1 percent lower risk of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity. Likewise, those who consumed 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine daily had a 40.7 percent lower risk.

“The findings highlight that promoting moderate coffee or caffeine intake as a dietary habit for healthy people may have far-reaching benefits for the prevention of CM,” concluded lead author Chaofu Ke, a researcher at the School of Public Health of Suzhou Medical College of Soochow University in Suzhou, China.
