‘Ruthless’ Möller killers convicted – New Era

“It remains a well-known fact that no lengthy prison sentence can bring back the deceased, nor can it restore his wife’s health to what it was before the attack.”

This was stated by Judge Dinnah Usiku of the Windhoek High Court when she sentenced the four men found guilty of the murder and robbery of Hans-Jorg Moller to 35 years in prison each.

Panduleni Gotlieb, David Tashiya, David Shekundja and Elly Ndapuka Hinaivali were convicted of one count of premeditated murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of premeditated burglary and robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts each of contravening the Arms and Ammunition Act.

She sentenced them to 26 years in prison for murder, six years in prison for attempted murder, one year in prison for conspiracy to commit burglary with the intent to commit theft and robbery, three years in prison for burglary with the intent to commit theft and robbery, six months in prison for possession of a firearm without a license and six months in prison for possession of ammunition without a firearm.

She also ordered that the sentences for conspiracy and possession of weapons and ammunition would run concurrently with the sentence for burglary. In addition, she declared each person unfit to possess a firearm or ammunition for three years after his release.

She declared the gun forfeit to the state and stated that it must be destroyed immediately.

She said it was of great significance that the accused had shown no remorse for the horrific crimes they committed against innocent victims, who were attacked in the privacy of their own homes while they slept.

She added that it appears all four suspects were more concerned about themselves and their children than the death of the victim.

“They don’t seem to realize the impact it has had on his wife, children and their families,” the judge said.

She noted that the crimes of burglary with a view to robbery and aggravated robbery, which is theft with violence, are serious.

Not only does it invade the privacy of residents, it also violates the property rights of owners and poses a threat to the integrity and security of the individual.

“It is not uncommon for innocent lives to be lost – as in this case, when the residents were confronted by the perpetrators of these crimes,” the judge noted, continuing: “The deceased was murdered in cold blood, while the complainant in relation to the second charge was severely abused by more than two adult male adults. She was abused to the point of being killed. In my opinion, the circumstances of the accused persons play an insignificant role, compared to the cruel and inhuman manner in which the crimes were committed.”
